Cloud Pavilion

Commissioned by Bumbershoot Arts Festival

This site-specific installation is constructed from assemblages of inflatable pillows known as dunnage bags, stacked and strapped together to form large, interactive spaces. Designed to offer festival-goers a retreat from the bustling main grounds, the installation invites visitors to explore and relax within its soft, enveloping forms — A gentle reminder to dream and float in the present.

  • Walking through, one couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder, like stepping into the clouds themselves. The pavilion wasn’t just a backdrop but a space that fostered reflection, connection, and joy. It was a gentle reminder to dream and float in the present.

  • Each piece was painted in an ombre of blue and then hand affected with graphics that further told the story of the pavilion.

  • Each pillow pillar was ratchet strapped together into triangles. Next, each pillar was internally lit and activated using a DMX-controlled lighting design. Lights swam through the installation creating a mesmerizing immersive effect.

The Making Of

Visitors ascended its multi-level design, enveloped in the calmness of a blue sky in pillow form. Every step brought new sights and a playful perspective, reminding festival-goers of the simplicity and beauty found in looking up.
